Most brands plan out-of-home advertising in calendar months. Nigerian consumers, however, move and spend in distinct cultural, religious and commercial seasons. School resumptions, Ramadan and Eid, Easter, Black Friday, Christmas travel and Valentine’s Day can all change where people go, how long they stay and what they are ready to buy.

A useful OOH calendar should match placement, timing and creative to the periods that matter most to each audience. This does not require abandoning long-term visibility. It means maintaining the right level of presence through the year and adding weight when movement and purchase intent are likely to rise.

Why Seasonal Planning Changes the Media Buy

Attention is not distributed evenly across the year. It tends to cluster around paydays, festivals, homecomings, school calendars and gifting periods. An annual campaign can still build familiarity, but a seasonal plan helps a brand concentrate budget when a message is most relevant.

The planning question therefore changes. Instead of asking only how many sites a budget can support for 12 months, advertisers should identify the moments that matter to their customers, map the journeys associated with those moments and choose locations that can influence the next decision.

For many brands in Nigeria, five demand periods provide a practical starting point.

1. January Reset and Valentine Spending

Market context January is usually a cautious month for households managing school fees, transport costs and post-December expenses. February shifts attention towards gifting, dining, beauty, fashion, hospitality and mobile devices around Valentine’s Day.

Audience movement January activity is concentrated around essential commutes and routine shopping. In February, malls, restaurants, leisure destinations and gifting corridors become more relevant. Mall entrances, food courts and retail clusters can place a brand close to the point of choice.

Creative and format January messaging should emphasise value, reassurance and practical benefit. Valentine campaigns can use stronger emotion, gifting prompts and time-sensitive offers. Static formats help build presence across the full period, while digital screens can rotate messages by time of day where the technology and operating hours allow.

When to plan Secure January placements by early December. Valentine inventory should ideally be confirmed by mid-January, particularly in high-demand malls and leisure locations.

2. Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan and Eid influence food, grocery, travel, retail and gifting behaviour across Nigeria. In May 2026, Daily Trust reported that Visa premium consumer-card spending rose by 20 per cent year on year during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. The same analysis recorded a 25 per cent rise in food and grocery spending in the week before Ramadan, a 35 per cent increase in transactions between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., and an 80 per cent rise in food and restaurant spending around Eid.

These figures cover spending on Visa premium consumer cards, not total consumer spending in Nigeria. They are best treated as a directional signal that timing, category and time of day can change significantly during the period.

Audience movement Relevant journeys may connect homes, markets, mosques, workplaces, malls and family visits. Evening activity can become more important, although mall schedules and local trading patterns differ by location.

Creative and format Sequence the campaign around changing needs. Before Ramadan, focus on preparation and stock-up messages. During the month, emphasise value, nourishment and convenience. In the final days and through Eid, shift towards celebration, travel and gifting. Digital screens can support time-sensitive creative where operating hours allow, while static boards and lamp poles maintain continuous presence.

When to plan Ramadan follows the lunar calendar and moves each year. Begin planning eight to ten weeks ahead and confirm the relevant dates before production.

3. Easter and Family Celebrations

Market context Easter can increase inter-state travel, family gatherings, church activity and spending on food and drinks. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day also create gifting opportunities for selected categories, although brands should confirm which locally observed dates are relevant to their customers.

Audience movement Airport roads, motor parks, major highways, churches, malls and family destinations may experience increased activity. The most valuable sites will depend on whether the campaign is designed for travellers, local shoppers or family leisure audiences.

Creative and format Easter campaigns can focus on shared meals, travel and family time. Parent-focused campaigns should make the product and gifting proposition clear. Mall screens and entrance placements work well for retail categories, while roadside formats can build reach along travel routes. Mobile reinforcement may be added where suitable data and measurement partners are available.

When to plan Aim to confirm Easter inventory about six weeks ahead. Allow four to five weeks for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day activity, including creative approval and production.

4. Back to School

Market context School calendars vary, but two recurring windows are late April to early May for third-term resumption and late July to mid-September for the new academic year. The larger window can drive spending on uniforms, books, shoes, bags, devices, transport and school fees.

Audience movement The school run creates repeated exposure along routes linking residential areas, schools, offices, markets and malls. Slow-moving morning and afternoon traffic can make well-selected roadside locations valuable, while community malls capture planned shopping trips.

Creative and format Use direct, practical messages linked to a specific parent need. Examples include payment convenience, bundles, product availability and deadlines. Roadside static formats can provide sustained reach, while mall screens and lamp poles bring the message closer to purchase.

When to plan For the main back-to-school period, confirm strategy and inventory by early July. Use the actual resumption dates of the target states and schools rather than relying on one national assumption.

5. Black Friday and the Festive Season

Black Friday activity in Nigeria often extends beyond a single day. A BusinessDay article published in November 2023 described Jumia’s Black Friday promotion as a month-long shopping event. This illustrates how major retail platforms have helped stretch discount activity across November, although brands should use their own sales and customer data to determine how much budget the period deserves.

Audience movement November activity is heavily retail-oriented, with attention around malls, electronics markets and high streets. December adds travel, concerts, weddings, restaurants and family homecomings. The audience journey can move quickly from shopping locations to leisure and transport corridors.

Creative and format November messages should make the product, price and deadline easy to understand. December creative can reflect celebration, travel and shared experiences while retaining a clear commercial action. Static formats build broad presence, while digital formats provide flexibility for changing offers where available.

When to plan Premium November inventory should be considered from September. Festive campaigns should be substantially agreed by early November, with enough time for approvals, production and installation.

A Practical Planning Framework

For each demand period, organise the plan around three decisions.

PrinciplePlanning questionApplication
MomentWhen is purchase intent likely to rise?Use paydays, festivals, school calendars and the brand’s own sales data to identify the relevant period.
MovementWhere will the audience travel or gather?Map the journey between home, work, school, markets, malls, worship centres and leisure destinations.
MessageWhat does the audience need to hear at that point?Match the creative to the immediate need, such as value, preparation, gifting, convenience or a clear deadline.
